Tonight I essentially committed myself to working as a camp counselor this summer. I worked at Camp Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi for three summers from 2002-2004 and loved it. It's located on the beach with an 1,100-foot pier extending into the bay.
Here's part of my reasoning for returning:
- It's a job--as in, it pays me to do something that I enjoy which is more than I've got right now.
- I'll be able to continue job searching and applying for positions. Also, me working is with the understanding that if I find permanent employment, I'll be able to step down from my position.
- There is a possibility that some of the staff (and perhaps some of my favorite people in the world) that I've worked with before will be returning for very similar reasons.
- I'll be able to help bring camp back to it's former greatness. After Hurricane Katrina practically decimated campus in August of 2005, camp was not operated for a few years. In 2008, a new camp director reopened, but he had a lot of difficulties for the two years that he was in charge mostly due to his own incompetence. However, this year, the director is one of my former co-counselors and he's ready to bring back some old school productivity with him.
- Honestly, I don't know what else to do. Job searching hasn't been the most successful so far though I'm still very hopeful and know that it's only a matter of time. I'd much rather be productive with my life while I wait.
