As I've mentioned before, I'm not great at picking favorites especially when it comes to movies. So, in an attempt to narrow down my selections, I've decided to write about one film that I really love each week or so. Hopefully, this will help me formulate a Top 10 list someday and will open your eyes to something new and exciting.
Across the Universe
Two words make this movie fantastic--Beatles Musical. Even more exciting is that it's done particularly well. Julie Taymor follows some of the well-known and not-so-well-known music from the Beatles's catalog and constructs a story about love, friendship, heartache, war, drugs, sex, rock and roll, and freedom that really works.
There's a bunch of random bits of trivia and subtle references that fans of the super-group should pick up on fairly easily. For example, the main characters' names are taken from songs--Jude and Lucy as well as Max ("Maxwell's Silver Hammer"), Sadie ("Sexy Sadie") and Prudence ("Dear, Prudence"). Also, they changed up a few of the songs during the recording process to provide a new perspective and highlight some of the most popular aspects (such as the bass line in "Come Together" which was done by dragging rubber balls along the back of an upright bass!)
I'm including some videos from the movie. You'll notice that there are quite a few high profile cameos as well, including Salma Hayek, Bono, Eddie Izzard, and Joe Cocker. If you watch the movie, the story and scenes used to set up "Let it Be" are phenomenal and can be extremely emotional.
